Why is cartilage taken from the ribs during rhinoplasty?

In the world of rhinoplasty, especially in revision and secondary cases, one of the most frequently asked and sometimes viewed with apprehension is the use of rib cartilage. So, why is the cartilage in our own nose sometimes insufficient, and why do we need rib cartilage?

Why is Cartilage Support Important?

A nose needs a strong “skeletal” structure to both look beautiful and allow for healthy breathing. If the nasal bridge has collapsed and the nasal tip has drooped, or if the septal cartilages in the middle section have been used up and depleted in previous surgeries, an external support source is needed.

Why is rib cartilage preferred?

  • Sufficient Quantity and Form: In revision rhinoplasty operations, the cartilage inside the nose is often insufficient. Rib cartilage is the richest and strongest source of cartilage we need to lift the nasal tip or correct the nasal bridge.
  • Durability and Strength: Rib cartilage is much harder and more resistant than ear cartilage. This ensures that the new shape of the nose is maintained for many years and helps to ensure the “aesthetic naturalness” is permanent.
  • The Body’s Own Tissue: Unlike synthetic materials from external sources, tissue taken from the person’s own rib is 100% compatible with the body; the risk of infection or rejection by the body is negligible.

How is the process carried out?

Many of our patients worry that this procedure will leave a very large scar or be painful. However, with current surgical techniques:

Thanks to the expertise of Op. Dr. Mehmet Durmuşoğlu and the meticulous work of his professional team, the level of postoperative comfort is quite high.

  • A very small incision of approximately 2-3 cm is made in the crease under the breast to remove cartilage.
  • This scar fades over time and does not pose an aesthetic problem.
  • Piezo surgery, performed with the expertise of Op. Dr. Mehmet Durmuşoğlu, reshapes the bone structure using sound waves. The advantages of this method over laser (and traditional methods) are as follows:

Ultrasonic; Integration with Piezo Technology

Cartilage taken from the ribs is placed into the nasal structure using the precision provided by Ultrasonic Piezo Rhinoplasty technology. Thanks to this technology, nasal bones and cartilage grafts are placed with millimeter precision, thus accelerating the healing process and achieving smoother results.

Who is it suitable for?

  • Patients who have previously undergone one or more nose surgeries (Revision Rhinoplasty).
  • Individuals whose nasal cartilage has completely collapsed as a result of serious trauma.
  • Individuals with congenitally very weak nasal cartilage structure.

Beauty Built on Solid Foundations

Remember, a successful rhinoplasty should not only improve the appearance but also extend the functional lifespan of the nose. Rib cartilage harvesting, especially in challenging cases, is the gold standard for a “second chance” and lifelong aesthetic naturalness.
